Sean Virnig and Rawland Drakkar Win "Best in Show" at Rough Riders Rally Annual Shindig
Rough Rider &bull Yesterday
Welcome to the internet home of the Rough Riders. Our slogan is "Any Bike, Anywhere" and we believe in riding any distance, in any conditions, over any terrain, at any time of day or night. That sounds really hard-core, perhaps, but mainly we enjoy getting "out there" by riding roads, dirt roads, trails, and paths on whatever bike we happen to be on or have handy. Sometimes the pavement's long gone and we're still on our "road bikes" or some bike that would be commonly considered inadequate for the job - and that's just fine by us! Rough Riding is… Full Story »

I Am Beginning to Have Doubts About What I Previously Considered a Brilliant Race Strategy
Fat Cyclist &bull Yesterday
Some strategies must be carefully crafted and executed, over a period of weeks - nay, months - if they are to be successfully executed. No cutting corners. No details ignored. No contingencies left unconsidered (which is to say, I have considered all contingencies). I'm excited to share my plan with you in great detail, because I think that whether you're doing this race or another endurance mountain bike race in the future, my carefully-crafted plan should provide valuable guidance. But enough preamble!" I imagine those of you who use words like… Full Story »

Ask BikePortland: Any changes planned for NE Ainsworth?
BikePortland.org &bull Sep 1, 2010
This week's question comes from reader Kinya Hanada. Kinya touches on a question I've wondered myself for several years now. She loves riding on NE Ainsworth because it's a "nice, direct route," but wonders if there are any plans to make it more pleasant to bike on (emphasis mine). I was wondering if you know if there is anything planned for Ainsworth St., specifically on east of MLK. I… Full Story »

State DOTs call for expansion of highway system: Could bikes benefit?
BikePortland.org &bull Sep 1, 2010
On Monday, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) -- an influential group of state DOT directors -- announced a report calling on Congress to prioritize funding for expanded rural highway capacity in the forthcoming re-write of the transportation bill. Spending hundreds of billions on highway projects and adding 30,000 new lane miles is sure to raise eyebrows in active transportation circles, but could AASHTO's plan help improve biking conditions on highways across America? In a statement about the new report, AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley says, "Improving connectivity for the 60 million Americans who live in rural… Full Story »

NYC: Shoup to O'Toole: The Market for Parking Is Anything But Free
Streetsblog &bull Sep 1, 2010
We're reprinting this reply [PDF] from UCLA professor Donald Shoup, author of the High Cost of Free Parking, to Randal O'Toole, the libertarian Cato Institute senior fellow who refuses to acknowledge the role of massive government intervention in the market for parking, and the effect this has had on America's car dependence. It's an excellent guide to the misdirection, mistakes, logical fallacies, and falsehoods that form the foundation of O'Toole's arguments. Shoup (left) O'Toole (right). One of these gentlemen has written the definitive volume on parking policy. The other says he has yet to read it. You were responding to… Full Story »
