  8. Sea change ahead for Bell helmets

    Bikeradar.com &bull Jan 22, 2012

Helmet makers Giro and Bell were once bitter rivals but that all changed in 2003. When Giro bought Bell that year, many wondered how the purchase would affect the latter brand, with fears that it would become the 'lesser child' of sorts, garnering less attention and R&D. In effect, that's exactly what's happened: Bell… Full Story »

  10. Perchance to Dream: Could Gilbert Win the Giro Someday?

    Podium Café &bull Jan 20, 2012

Sporza (via GvA) is asking this question today -- can BMC's Philippe Gilbert, slayer of pelotons in the one-day world, win a big stage race? The Belgian press offers no real answer; BMC manager Andy Rihs suggests that something like Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico is in the cards, which of course it is, since the favorites for March races are kind of self-selecting and the decisive climbs are not especially Alpe-like. But I don't see Gilbert busting out for a winter race whose prestige is nice but far below the monuments he's been feasting off of lately. If Gilbert were to… Full Story »

Twitter feed? A lot is riding on the outcome of that call, the one where Team NetApp finds out if the Giro is on their calendar for this year or not. It's not pro forma, the news could be good or bad. The team doesn't look like a classic Giro squad (re: heavily Italian) but they can deliver some aggressive riding and a slew of German media coverage, both of which would benefit the race. The team is entering its fourth season, about when ambitious projects can expect to start moving up. So there is a chance. Either way, Germany's… Full Story »

  20. Offseason Capsule: Vacansoleil's Growing Pains

    Podium Café &bull Jan 6, 2012

A lot of ink was spilled a year ago or more regarding the unfortunate turn of events Vacansoleil faced in 2010 as it bid to become the Netherlands' other Pro Tour Team. The springboard it selected was the presence of the world's two biggest races, the 2010 Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, launching themselves on Dutch soil, at some cost to the good people of the Netherlands.
