Gee! Maps!
Two Cities Two Wheels &bull Yesterday
I heard on the radio this morning that Google Maps now has an option to map routes for bicycles. This sounded cool; I've been generally impressed with their auto mapping and even their transit mapping works well here in the Twin Cities, telling you which bus you need and when the next one should arrive at your location. It would be an exaggeration to say I leapt immediately out of bed to give the bicycle routing a try, but once I did slither sluglike from my repose and completed my… Full Story »

Creature Comforts: Let's Get Serious
Bike Snob NYC &bull Yesterday
If you're reading this blog and someone else hasn't printed it out for you, chances are you use the "Internet." And if you use the Internet, you're no doubt aware by now of two major news stories. With regard to the second story, upon hearing it I immediately tested out the bicycle direction-giving thingy by plugging in an oft-traveled route of mine, and I was presented by three meh-inspiring options, one of which seemed to include my mounting an inconsiderate and possibly illegal assault on the pedestrian paths in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. As far as the first news story goes,… Full Story »

Google Adds Biking To Google Maps
Bike Hugger &bull Yesterday
Before heading to Florida on a work trip several years ago I lay sprawled across my den with a giant road map of the area, a set of highlighters, a guide book and my laptop. A frequent traveler, I like to bring my folding bike with me, and I like to head out on bike rides between meetings or trade show stops. As I looked up cycling routes in my guide… Full Story »

Completing U.S. 27 piece of bike route network is essential
Bike as Transportation &bull Mar 6, 2010
Aaron has been commuting from downtown to the North Side for the fitness benefits and financial savings, but remarks about the poor suitability of the short stretch that has to use U.S. 27. Such a costly major change should come with a comprehensive justification of the benefits, yet all that was presented that was it would be safer, without elaboration. When I asked the engineer James Loew about hard data on crash or safety issues, he confessed that he knew… Full Story »

Trans Iowa V6: Thoughts Part XVI
Guitar Ted Productions &bull Mar 6, 2010
Just outside Grinnell on the T.I.V6 course. Things are slow on the "Official Trans Iowa Thread" on mtbr.com. Things are slow on the chit-chat front via e-mail, and obviously with the severity of the winter, not much has been going on with the course recon. It might seem as though you are the only one training. It might seem like we fell asleep. I assure you that you are dead wrong if… Full Story »

I guess this is the peak
Up in Alaska &bull Mar 5, 2010
I only had one goal for this weekend, and that was to do a lot of biking. This was my weekend to "peak" my rather scattershot training for the White Mountains 100, but I figured it was time to finally buckle down and put some long hours in the saddle. I tried to get all of my chores done during the week just so I would have all day to ride and all night to relax and visit friends on Thursday and Friday. I was aiming for 12-14 hours of pedaling over two days. And since the weather was forecast… Full Story »
