  7. NYC: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Wastefulness

    Streetsblog &bull Yesterday

The Republican presidential campaign recently produced a couple of characteristic bits of what Americans, for lack of a better word, call "news": Newt Gingrich declaring that New Yorkers "live in high rises and ride the subway" and thus don't care about gasoline prices; and Tea Party "activists" in Virginia, Florida and Maine convinced that smart-growth initiatives are - wait for it - a UN plot! Unfortunately, nuttiness like this is no new thing,… Full Story »

  13. Should bicycles be registered? - Crikey (blog)

    Google Cycling News &bull Yesterday

Fairfax columnist Bruce Guthrie reckons there's a case for compulsory registration of bicycles. He thinks rego "might at least begin to heal the rift between riders and motorists" by making cyclists more accountable for what he sees as their poor on-road behaviour. The key downsides of registration are clear enough. It would impose an ongoing financial burden on households, it would very likely be a deterrent to cycling, and it would require considerable resources to administer. The politics are so horrendous it's not likely to happen anyway (there are just too many households… Full Story »

At the moment the discussion between the coalition government parties is centered on how much should be charged outside rush hour. The Social Democrats and The radical Left (which is a center party, and not at all radical in any way) seem to believe congestion is something which only happens between 7 and 9 in the morning, and 3 and 5 in the afternoon. Which is factually wrong, first of all even on sunday afternoons we have large cross town streets, where cars cue bumper to bumper, intersection to intersection, in both directions, even though there are no particular happenings,… Full Story »

  18. Will UK politicians ever seek to restrain the motorised majority?

I signed up to the cycle safe campaign by The Times. There has been some fine reporting on the real and rightly worrying danger posed by motorised traffic but, as today's paper exemplifies, there's a risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There are some good bits in today's newspaper, there are some awful bits in today's newspaper. Which will people most remember? The bad bits. Political parties are said to have welcomed The Times campaign, and Labour is even calling for a Cycling Summit. All well and good but if politicians think cycling is so incredibly dangerous… Full Story »
